Why this location needs review

Turning left from the shopping center onto LaVista Road requires drivers to find an opening across fast moving traffic from both directions. People who work beside this driveway have witnessed repeated crashes, close calls, and difficult turns here over the years.

The driveway is also immediately before two lanes merge into one. Drivers often approach that merge too quickly or accelerate to get ahead, creating dangerous cutoffs and conflicts at two closely connected points. DeKalb County has previously been asked to evaluate a traffic signal here. A signal and clearly marked crosswalk could substantially slow traffic, create safer gaps for vehicles leaving the shopping center, and give pedestrians a safer place to cross. County traffic engineers should urgently evaluate those and other solutions and determine the best treatment.

A recent fatal crash in this immediate area has renewed community concern. Authorities are investigating, and this effort makes no claim about the cause.

To the DeKalb County Chief Executive Officer, Board of Commissioners, and Public Works Transportation Division:

We ask DeKalb County to promptly conduct a formal traffic engineering and safety review of the shopping center driveway onto LaVista Road between AAA at 2161 LaVista Road and Outback Steakhouse at 2145 LaVista Road, directly across from 2160 LaVista Road.

Please review crash history, traffic volume, turning movements, sight distance, vehicle speeds, pedestrian conditions, the nearby merge, signs, and pavement markings. Then share the findings and implement the most effective feasible safety improvements as promptly as possible.

Options may include a traffic signal if warranted, safer turning controls, speed reduction measures, lane or merge changes, better signs or markings, or another solution. We ask qualified traffic engineers to determine the appropriate treatment.

This asks for action, not a predetermined design. Professional traffic engineers should choose the final solution.
